The Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka to Ghana, Wasantha Perera, highlighted untapped investment opportunities for the Sri Lankan business community in Ghana. This marks a historic milestone as the first consul general appointed by Sri Lanka to Ghana, signaling the potential for fruitful economic cooperation between the two countries. Perera emphasized Ghana’s favorable investment climate, particularly welcoming towards foreign direct investments (FDIs), positioning it as a gateway to Western Africa.
Perera pointed out successful ventures by Sri Lankan companies in Ghana, spanning sectors like apparel, power generation, biscuits, construction, steel, tea exports, microfinance, and agribusiness. With a burgeoning middle class in Ghana, opportunities in the health sector, including hospitals and medical laboratories, present significant growth prospects. The emergence of medical tourism and the potential for Sri Lankan private sector hospitals to offer cost-effective surgical solutions are areas of interest.
Additionally, Perera highlighted opportunities in the insurance sector, construction expertise, high-quality packaging for Ghana’s tea industry, and international distribution networks. He stressed the need for Sri Lankan companies to tap into Ghana’s education sector, particularly in technical and apparel training, to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals driven by US investments in Ghana’s garment sector. Creating awareness through tourism roadshows could position Sri Lanka as an ideal destination for Ghanaians seeking quality healthcare, education, and tourism experiences.
