Temporary Relief Secured for $5.4 Billion Export Sector
The Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) has praised the Sri Lankan government for its rapid and strategic response to the recent US tariff announcements that posed a significant threat to key export industries.
In a statement issued today, JAAF commended President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for his decisive intervention, including direct engagement with the US Trade Representative (USTR) and communication with US President Donald Trump. These efforts have reportedly led to Sri Lanka’s likely inclusion in a crucial 90-day tariff suspension.
This temporary reprieve brings much-needed stability to the country’s $5.4 billion apparel export sector, which provides employment to more than 350,000 workers nationwide.
“The government’s swift action demonstrates its commitment to protecting Sri Lanka’s export economy,” JAAF noted, while also urging policymakers to leverage this interim solution to secure a more permanent trade agreement with the United States.
Industry experts highlight that the 90-day window offers Sri Lankan exporters valuable time to realign supply chains and strengthen negotiation strategies. With the apparel sector contributing nearly 45% of Sri Lanka’s total exports — and the US being the single largest buyer — maintaining favorable trade terms is seen as critical for sustained economic health.
As exporters regroup and plan for the future, stakeholders stress the importance of using this opportunity to push for comprehensive trade reforms and long-term market access.
