ASPIRE: Empowering Through Determination and Willpower

Dinusha Madhushani’s journey embodies the resilience and determination encapsulated in the phrase, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Despite facing numerous obstacles as a marginalized resource collector and mother, her unwavering commitment to securing a better future for her family, particularly her 14-year-old daughter, Shaini, sets her apart. Through the ASPIRE program, a collaboration between World Vision Lanka and The Coca-Cola Foundation, Dinusha found a lifeline, offering her the chance to rewrite her reality and contribute positively to Sri Lanka’s waste management ecosystem.

Introduced to ASPIRE by Reverend Fr. Linton Fernando, Dinusha’s journey took a transformative turn when she assumed management of the Nagoda Resource Bank. Despite grappling with challenges such as waste mixing and community behavior change, Dinusha’s proactive efforts and resilience propelled her forward. With her daughter’s evolving perspective and active involvement, their family bond strengthened, symbolizing their unity amidst adversity.

Dinusha’s success story underscores the transformative impact of initiatives like ASPIRE, providing tools and support to empower individuals like her. The ASPIRE program’s collaboration with The Coca-Cola Foundation highlights a commitment to sustainable solutions and community empowerment. As Dinusha’s journey exemplifies the potential for positive change, it calls for increased collaboration between public and private sectors to amplify the impact of such initiatives and pave the way for more stories of resilience and hope in Sri Lanka’s communities.
