Backbay Solar Powers Up Eastern Province with New Solar Plants

Backbay Solar (Private) Limited has successfully commissioned two new ground-mounted solar power plants in Kommathurai, Batticaloa. These 2-megawatt plants, designated “SBS II 1X90 Vavunathivu 6” and “SBS II 1X90 Vavunathivu 7,” represent a significant contribution to Sri Lanka’s renewable energy goals.

The project is part of the Ceylon Electricity Board’s 1X90 SBS II solar tender, highlighting Backbay Solar’s commitment to supporting the government’s clean energy initiatives. Director of Backbay Solar, Sino Lanka Power Gen, and Orbital Energy, Dhiren Kundanmal, expressed pride in completing the project amidst Sri Lanka’s recent energy crisis. These solar plants are expected to generate approximately 3GWh of renewable energy per year, bolstering the national grid.

The successful completion of the project is a testament to collaborative efforts. State Ministers, Members of Parliament, and the Ceylon Electricity Board all played a vital role. Backbay Solar also acknowledges the invaluable support received from local communities, authorities, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, and funding partner NDB Bank.

This project marks a significant step forward for Backbay Solar, a subsidiary of Sino Lanka Power Gen and ultimately Orbital Energy, a leading renewable energy developer. The company’s commitment to driving renewable energy in Sri Lanka extends beyond this project, with plans for future initiatives that contribute to the government’s clean energy goals. With the successful completion of these solar plants, Backbay Solar paves the way for a brighter, more sustainable energy future for Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.
