Low-cost airline Bonza has ceased all flights, citing concerns over its business’s ongoing viability, leaving numerous passengers stranded. Chief executive Tim Jordan expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to customers and stated that discussions are underway to ensure continued competition in Australia’s domestic aviation sector. The airline, known for its affordable tickets and regional connectivity, faced challenges since its launch in January last year, including flight cancellations and route suspensions, amid a market largely dominated by Qantas and Virgin.
Transport Minister Catherine King announced plans for a hotline to assist affected passengers and has engaged competitor airlines to aid stranded travelers. Bonza’s decision reflects broader challenges in Australia’s aviation industry, where smaller carriers often struggle to compete against established giants in serving the country’s vast geography and scattered population centers.
