CBSL Governor Asserts Irreversibility of Current Economic Reforms, Cautions Against Ill-Planned Policy Experiments

Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe emphasized the importance of continuing with planned critical reforms amid ongoing economic challenges faced by Sri Lanka. Speaking at a special press conference at the CBSL headquarters, Dr. Weerasinghe underscored that the country is still recovering from its worst economic crisis since Independence. While acknowledging progress made by the end of 2023 compared to the previous year, he cautioned against hasty policy experiments that could jeopardize sustainable development.

Dr. Weerasinghe highlighted the necessity of implementing economic reforms with broad political and social consensus to prevent further economic decline. Emphasizing the significance of sustainable growth and enhancing the welfare of the populace, he stressed the importance of ongoing reform efforts. His remarks were made in light of the “Annual Economic Commentary 2023” and “Financial Statements and Operations of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka 2023” reports issued by the CBSL Act No. 16 of 2023.

The press conference also featured insights from other CBSL officials, including Senior Deputy Governor T.M.J.Y.P. Fernando, Assistant Governor Dr. C. Amarasekara, Director of Economic Research Dr. S. Jegajeevan, and Additional Director of Economic Research Dr. L.R.C. Pathberiya.
