Ceylon Energy and HJT China Complete 33kV Power Lines in Maho and Ampara

Ceylon Energy, in collaboration with HJT China, proudly announces the successful completion of the Maho and Ampara 33kV power distribution lines. This achievement is a significant milestone within the Supporting Electricity Supply Reliability Improvement Project (SESRIP), a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing energy distribution across Sri Lanka.

The SESRIP addresses the energy needs of some of the most underserved regions in the country. Spanning 2,372 kilometers of low-voltage line extensions and incorporating 106 rural electrification schemes, the project is pivotal for ensuring reliable energy access nationwide. With over 270 kilometers of infrastructure and 13 33kV switching gantries, SESRIP is set to provide dependable electricity to more than 35,000 households, particularly in the former conflict-affected Northern and Eastern provinces, as well as in Uva and North Central provinces where electrification levels are lagging.

Central to SESRIP’s mission is the enhancement of the medium-voltage network, which will significantly boost the quality and reliability of electricity supply to over 493,000 consumers. This initiative fosters inclusivity, ensuring all Sri Lankans, regardless of location, have access to stable energy. Additionally, SESRIP aims to integrate renewable energy sources into the national grid, reducing distribution power losses and contributing to national sustainability goals.

Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with a total investment of $42 million, Ceylon Energy and HJT China have played vital roles in bringing this ambitious project to life, demonstrating their commitment to positive change and sustainable development in Sri Lanka.

One key component, the Maho power distribution line, stretches 25 kilometers from Maho to Maeliya, supported by 105 steel structures carrying electricity at 33kV. This line is more than just infrastructure; it serves as a lifeline for local businesses, schools, and households, enhancing their operational efficiency.

In the Eastern Province, the completion of the Ampara power distribution line spans 12 kilometers from Ampara to Uhana, supported by 56 steel towers, also carrying electricity at 33kV. This development is expected to uplift the livelihoods of countless families and industries in the region.

Ceylon Energy Chairman Madushanka Fernando reflected on this achievement, stating, “This is a new beginning of a brighter era.” His words capture the resilience and dedication of all stakeholders involved in the SESRIP, who have tirelessly worked to bring this vision to fruition, ensuring lasting benefits for the communities served by the new power lines.

As Ceylon Energy and HJT China advance their efforts on the SESRIP, Sri Lanka’s energy landscape appears brighter than ever. The completion of the Maho and Ampara power distribution lines marks just the beginning of a project dedicated to delivering reliable, sustainable, and inclusive energy to all Sri Lankans. This milestone showcases what can be accomplished through innovation, partnership, and a commitment to progress, heralding a new era of opportunity and development for rural and underserved areas.
