The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recorded a statement from Namal Rajapaksa, National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), regarding a financial transaction complaint filed by a Malaysian businessman. The inquiry, which lasted over two hours, took place at the CID headquarters, where Rajapaksa arrived at 9:00 a.m. with his legal team.
Before entering for questioning, Rajapaksa addressed the media, expressing uncertainty about the nature of the summons. “I don’t know the matter. It’s better to be called in. The only way to get rid of the accusations against us is to come here. Because some lie with conviction. We are not those who lie with conviction. We will go and give our statement with conviction and come,” he stated.
According to Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa, the investigation relates to a financial transaction allegedly occurring between 2010 and 2015, during which funds were reportedly received by Rajapaksa. The anonymous complaint filed by the Malaysian businessman is currently under investigation by the CID.
After his statement, Rajapaksa urged the Government not to politicize the investigation process, highlighting that it is common practice to question former MPs after an election.
