Sri Lanka’s tourism sector shines in the new year with the Colombo-Badulla train journey earning a spot among the world’s top 10 train rides for 2025.

Renowned travel guide Lonely Planet has ranked the iconic route as the 7th best scenic train ride globally, highlighting its breathtaking landscapes and cultural significance.

Travel Talks Asia lauded the recognition, emphasizing that it reflects Sri Lanka’s dedication to delivering outstanding travel experiences. “This feature in a prestigious list affirms Sri Lanka’s standing as a must-visit destination for global travellers,” the guide stated.

Spanning over 290 kilometres, the Colombo-Badulla train route, operated by the Railway Department, runs five daily trains and offers unforgettable views of tea plantations, misty mountains, and waterfalls. Key stops include Ella, Nanu Oya, and Haputale, making it a favourite among travellers who call it the ‘Ella Odyssey.’

The ranking is part of Lonely Planet’s annual list celebrating the world’s best train journeys, further positioning Sri Lanka as a top destination for unique travel experiences.
