Jetwing Hotels, an iconic name in Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector for over five decades, has made a significant investment of over USD one million to expand its solar photovoltaic (PV) installations by 1.6 megawatts (MW) by July 2024. The installation work, which began in December 2023, has reached an impressive 65% completion, showcasing Jetwing’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.
Since 2010, Jetwing Hotels has been a pioneer in integrating renewable energy into its hotel operations. Starting with a 20-kilowatt (kW) system at Jetwing Blue in Negombo, the company has strategically implemented solar PV systems totaling 925kW across its properties and corporate office (Jetwing House) in Colombo, which boasts its own 40kW solar PV system.
In 2023 alone, Jetwing Hotels generated 1,069-megawatt hours (MWh) of solar energy, equivalent to powering 13,490 households and offsetting 608 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The upcoming expansion will boost their solar capacity to 2.6 MW, tripling their current electricity contribution from solar power to cover 24% of their total usage. Innovative approaches like integrating PV systems into car park roofs and exporting surplus energy to the national grid demonstrate Jetwing’s forward-thinking sustainability initiatives. Their commitment aligns with Sri Lanka’s green development goals, showcasing a remarkable 66% self-reliance on renewable energy sources across their properties.
