John Keells Group and University of Moratuwa Celebrate 19 Years of Transforming Transport and Logistics Talent in Sri Lanka

The John Keells Group Transportation Sector and the University of Moratuwa’s Department of Transport Management & Logistics Engineering (TM&LE) mark a significant milestone—19 years of impactful collaboration aimed at shaping the next generation of leaders in Sri Lanka’s transport and logistics sectors.

Launched in 2006, the partnership reflects a deep, ongoing commitment to human capital development. It goes far beyond scholarships, offering a comprehensive programme that empowers students with academic support, soft skills training, and real-world industry experience across Aviation, Shipping, Supply Chain Management, and Public Transport.

The programme features merit- and need-based scholarships, English language and communication training conducted by John Keells Foundation, and a structured mentoring initiative including hands-on internships and industrial placements within the Group’s transportation companies.

At this year’s celebration held at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, senior leaders from John Keells Group, university faculty, students, and key industry stakeholders gathered to recognize the achievements of the participating students. The event featured certificate awards and testimonials highlighting the personal and professional transformations enabled by the programme.

“We’re proud to continue investing in Sri Lanka’s transportation future,” said Zafir Hashim, President – Transportation and Plantation Sectors, John Keells Group. “These young minds will be central to advancing logistics and transport—a cornerstone of our national development.”

Carmeline Jayasuriya, Head of CSR, John Keells Group, reinforced the importance of empowering youth: “This partnership is more than an investment in education—it’s an investment in the nation’s progress. These students represent the future of our workforce.”

To date, the programme has awarded approximately 290 scholarships and trained over 1,000 students in essential communication skills. Many graduates have gone on to secure internships and permanent roles at leading John Keells companies including John Keells Logistics, Lanka Marine Services, and South Asia Gateway Terminals.

This initiative aligns with John Keells Holdings PLC’s broader mission of driving sustainable national growth. As Sri Lanka’s largest listed company by market capitalization—with over 80 companies across seven industries—JKH is also recognized for its strong CSR credentials, transparent governance, and commitment to sustainability through efforts like Plasticcycle and its CSR arm, John Keells Foundation.
