The Helembawewa Farmer’s Organisation (HFO) recently concluded a four-day hunger strike by their chairman, sparked by a critical water issue. Minister Manusha Nanayakkara’s intervention during a public service event led to discussions with Minister Pavitra Wanniarachchi, resulting in a commitment to allocate Rs. 225 million in the upcoming Budget to address irrigation water needs in the Helabawewa Farming Colony. The HFO, previously unsatisfied with proposed solutions, agreed to end their protest upon hearing of the planned budget allocation.
The situation stems from a water shortage affecting about 200 farming families in the Helambawewa Farming Colony, despite earlier plans under the Yan oya project to provide irrigation water. Delays and alleged mismanagement led to crop failures, prompting the farmers’ persistent calls for adequate water access.
