The Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, in partnership with Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission, hosted a scholarship award ceremony on October 30 to distribute the prestigious Allama Iqbal Scholarships to Sri Lankan students. Named after the renowned philosopher and poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, also known as the “Poet of the East,” the scholarship program is designed to honor Iqbal’s legacy of inspiring education and intellectual growth.
Launched in 2019, the Allama Iqbal Scholarship Program has provided fully funded educational opportunities for Sri Lankan students. This year marks the program’s sixth batch, with 200 scholarships awarded to students pursuing graduate, postgraduate, and PhD studies. Currently, around 500 Sri Lankan students are studying in Pakistan through this initiative, with the next intake scheduled for February 2025.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Maj. Gen. (R) Faheem Ul Aziz, HI (M), emphasized that the scholarship initiative is a testament to the strong and enduring ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He encouraged students to make the most of this opportunity, stating, “As you pursue your studies, remember that you are ambassadors of your country and culture. Engage with your peers, share experiences, and serve as a bridge between our nations. The knowledge and understanding you gain will be invaluable as we work together to face global challenges.”
The event’s Chief Guest, Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, along with the High Commissioner and other distinguished guests, presented the scholarships to the students. Attendees included notable figures from academia, business, and government sectors, celebrating this significant step in fostering educational exchange and strengthening the bond between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
