Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Keith D. Bernard has announced that the Port of Colombo is set to boost its productivity and efficiency in global port operations by adopting advanced technology and automation. Bernard made these remarks during his keynote address at a seminar organized by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (UK) Sri Lanka Branch, held on August 27 at the Olympic House in Colombo. The seminar focused on the topic: ‘The Impact of Port Congestion, Space Restrictions, and Equipment Shortages on Supply Chains.’
Despite facing challenges such as congestion, limited space, and equipment shortages, Bernard emphasized that the Port of Colombo remains a key hub in global trade due to its resilience and adaptability.
To enhance operations, the Port is implementing several advanced technological initiatives, including state-of-the-art smart terminals, Advanced Terminal Operating Systems (TOS), a Port Community System (PCS), a Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS), and a Megaport Radiation Detection System. Furthermore, the Port is set to adopt the latest ERP systems and green port initiatives to streamline processes and promote sustainability.
Bernard also highlighted the Port of Colombo’s recognition as the best-performing port globally in the first quarter of this year, boasting a 23.6% growth rate, reflecting its operational success and growth.
He also discussed the Port’s ability to handle distress vessels, noting recent technological upgrades that enable the management of unexpected cargo volume surges caused by regional disruptions.
With these technological advancements, the Port of Colombo aims to solidify its position as a critical player in the global maritime network, ensuring efficiency, security, and resilience in response to shifting global trade dynamics.
