President Allocates Rs. 5 Billion for Sri Lanka’s General Elections

Sri Lanka’s three-member cabinet, including President Anura Dissanayake, has sanctioned a proposal to allocate Rs. 5 billion from the government’s consolidated fund to facilitate the upcoming general elections.

Cabinet spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath explained that the 2024 budget had initially allocated funds for only one election, leaving no resources for a general election.

According to Article 150(4) of Sri Lanka’s constitution, the president has the authority to authorize expenditures from the consolidated fund.

Additionally, the Cabinet has approved a further allocation of Rs. 6 billion from the 2025 budget through a Vote on Account, which is anticipated to be presented to Parliament.
