President Ranil Wickremesinghe embarked on a visit to Nuwara Eliya yesterday, with a focus on reviving tourism in the picturesque hill country. His journey included a trek along a portion of the famed Pekoe Trail, highlighting its potential as a key attraction.
The Pekoe Trail, founded by mountaineer Miguel Cunat, is a 300-kilometer odyssey through Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, considered a hidden gem of Asia. The trail winds its way from Kandy southward towards Hatton and Horton Plains National Park, then east through Haputale and Ella before reaching Nuwara Eliya.
President Wickremesinghe’s visit extended beyond scenic exploration. He toured the Court Lodge Estate, known for its “Light Bright” tea, and emphasized the importance of offering Pekoe Trail hikers a taste of freshly brewed Sri Lankan tea. He also discussed ways to leverage the trail to strengthen tourism in the central highlands.
The President’s 3.2-kilometer trek along the Pekoe Trail wasn’t just about tourism. He interacted with estate workers, inquiring about their basic needs in terms of education, healthcare, and housing. He paid particular attention to the educational opportunities available for the children of these workers.
Cunat, the visionary behind the Pekoe Trail, believes Sri Lanka has the potential to become a world-class hiking and climbing destination. The Pekoe Trail offers a unique blend of diverse landscapes, historical immersion, cultural experiences, and authentic local cuisine. With its 22 stages, the trail can be customized for one-day adventures or multi-day expeditions, catering to varying preferences.
Development plans are in place to further enhance the Pekoe Trail with amenities that ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors. The project has garnered support from the European Union and USAID, aligning with Sri Lanka’s national tourism goals. The ultimate aim is to attract a new wave of tourists, particularly adventure seekers, while fostering economic growth within rural communities.
Cunat applauded President Wickremesinghe’s vision of revitalizing the Sri Lankan economy through tourism industry transformation. The President’s visit to Nuwara Eliya and his exploration of the Pekoe Trail’s potential serve as a springboard for this exciting initiative.
