Delayed Shipment Expected to Arrive Next Week
A salt shortage is gripping local markets, with prices soaring in the wake of a delayed import consignment. The Salt Producers’ Association has voiced concern over dwindling supplies, citing a holdup in the government-approved shipment of 30 metric tonnes of salt.
Ganaka Amarasinghe, Chairperson of the association, confirmed that although the import was sanctioned, unforeseen delays have disrupted distribution, leading to widespread shortages. “The delay has created a temporary gap in supply, which has impacted both availability and pricing,” he explained.
Reassuring the public, Amarasinghe noted that the situation is expected to normalize soon, with the delayed consignment due to arrive within the coming week.
In the meantime, consumers are feeling the pinch. Crystal salt, once a low-cost household staple, is now being sold at steep prices ranging from Rs. 450 to Rs. 500 per kilogram in some areas. The sudden price hike has sparked public outcry, with many taking to social media platforms to share their frustration and call for accountability.
Responding to the situation, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) confirmed it has received multiple complaints about price gouging. Asela Bandara, Director of Consumer Affairs and Information at the CAA, stated that raiding teams have been deployed to investigate reported incidents and take legal action where necessary.
As authorities work to stabilize the market, consumers are urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious pricing practices.
