Sri Lanka’s government is set to remove obstacles hindering the production and export of toddy, kithul, palm and coconut products, aiming to tap into a large overseas market for these goods.
The move comes after a meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Economic and Physical Plans, chaired by Mahindananda Aluthgamage. The Committee identified issues faced by producers and exporters and instructed relevant departments, including Excise and Customs, to streamline processes.
This initiative follows a recognition by the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries of the significant revenue potential from these products. The Committee believes that removing existing barriers will unlock this potential.
A key outcome is the removal of restrictions on wholesale distribution of toddy palm products, particularly from the Northern Province, both domestically and internationally. Additionally, exporters will be required to develop a system for smooth and efficient export of these goods.
The Committee is confident that this focus on toddy, kithul, palm and coconut products will generate substantial income for Sri Lanka in the future. A proposal outlining a comprehensive strategy for these products is expected from relevant authorities.
Representatives from various ministries and institutions, including Agriculture, Customs, Excise, Palm Development Board, Kitul Development Board, Coconut Development Board, Coconut Cultivation Board and the Coconut Research Institute, participated in the committee meeting.
