Sri Lanka to Import Coconut Kernels Amid Crop Shortfall

Sri Lanka will facilitate state-led imports of coconut kernels to support local mills in producing oil and other related products, Industries Minister Sunil Handunetti announced.

The decision comes as the country faces a significant coconut shortage, with restrictions in place on importing fresh nuts to prevent the risk of diseases.

“We have decided to import kernels and provide them to the mills,” Minister Handunetti stated.

Sri Lanka is a prominent exporter of powdered coconut milk, creamed coconut milk, and desiccated coconut. While the country permits coconut oil imports, it had previously restricted kernel imports.

Opposition legislator Dayasiri Jayasekera voiced concerns over the potential risks of importing unripe kernels, suggesting that private firms should handle the import process instead. However, Minister Handunetti confirmed that the government will proceed with the imports to address the shortfall.
