Sri Lanka to Sign MoU with China’s Chongqing Transmission Corp for Media Collaboration

Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Xi Jinping

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has granted approval for the state-run Rupavahini Corporation to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Chongqing Transmission Corporation Limited, aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in media development, training, and content exchange.

This move follows President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to China earlier this year, during which 15 MoUs were signed, including those in the media sector. The latest agreement is part of a broader initiative to strengthen media ties between the two nations.

According to the government, the MoU will pave the way for joint television productions, training exchanges, program sharing, and media promotion of tourism between Sri Lanka and the People’s Republic of China. It also supports academic and professional collaboration across public media institutions.

In the lead-up to this deal, the Sri Lankan Cabinet had previously approved several other media-related agreements with China. These included an MoU between the Ministry of Health and Mass Media and China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA), as well as agreements for Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (Lake House) and the Department of Government Information to collaborate with China’s Xinhua News Agency.

Additionally, the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation have been cleared to enter into cooperation agreements with China Media Group, reinforcing the expanding strategic media engagement between the two countries.
