Sri Lanka to Transform Marine Drive into Night Tourism Hotspot with ‘Marine Nights: Awakening Colombo’

In a bold move to revitalize Colombo’s night-time economy and elevate its tourism appeal, Sri Lanka has announced plans to develop the picturesque Marine Drive stretch from Kollupitiya to Dehiwela under the initiative titled “Marine Nights: Awakening Colombo.”

Minister of Tourism Nalinda Jayatissa revealed the plans at a press briefing, stating that the 7.4 km coastal drive—from the Kollupitiya Railway Station to the Dehiwela area—will be transformed into a vibrant hub for night tourism. The initiative aims to boost the local economy, support hospitality businesses, and enrich the overall tourist experience in Colombo.

“The focus will be primarily on a 400-meter zone extending from the edge of Galle Face to St. Thomas’ Primary School,” Minister Jayatissa said. “We plan to collaborate closely with hoteliers and business owners along the strip to bring this vision to life.”

The project comes as Sri Lanka sets an ambitious target of attracting 3 million tourists in 2025. However, officials have noted the country’s current lack of a thriving night economy as a significant gap in its tourism offering.

“Marine Nights” is expected to serve as a catalyst for nightlife development, offering new opportunities for entertainment, dining, and cultural engagement after dark.
