Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has achieved a significant milestone, with total tourist arrivals surpassing the entire number recorded in 2023 by October 1, 2024. The country welcomed 1,480,678 visitors from September 1 to 29, 2024, maintaining a daily average of approximately 4,000 arrivals. This brings the cumulative total for the year to exceed last year’s figure of 1,487,303.
In September alone, Sri Lanka recorded 118,010 tourist arrivals, continuing the trend of over 100,000 arrivals per month throughout 2024. The peak month so far has been February 2024, which saw 218,350 visitors, representing a 102.8% increase compared to February 2023.
Factors contributing to this growth include peaceful elections, the reintroduction of the ETA visa system, and the implementation of free visas on arrival for seven countries. Sri Lanka’s tourism officials anticipate that 2024 could become the best year for tourism, potentially exceeding the 2,333,796 arrivals achieved in 2018. The new government aims to increase annual arrivals to around 4 million in the future.
In parallel, Hilton plans to expand its footprint with three new properties in Negombo and Kandy, including a conversion of part of the Bogambara prison, along with a new Radisson Blu opening in Colombo next year at the former Galadari Hotel.
With the ETA visa system and the possibility of extending free visas on arrival to an additional 38 countries, the tourism sector is poised for further growth. Recently, Sri Lanka made a strong impression at the International French Travel Market (IFTM) in Paris, showcasing the island’s diverse tourism offerings alongside 26 leading companies, SriLankan Airlines, and government officials. This collaborative effort reinforces Sri Lanka’s commitment to enhancing its presence in the French travel market by highlighting its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
