Sri Lankan Innovation: A Moth Repellent Bulb and a Look Back

TOS Lanka Co. Ltd, a joint Sri Lankan and Japanese company, has made a significant stride in the agricultural sector with the introduction of the world’s first “anti moth pest repellent bulb.” This innovative product, developed through Japanese research and development with support from JAICA and UNDP, utilizes a novel approach to pest control. Unlike traditional methods that rely on light, chemicals, or traps to attract and eliminate moths, this bulb employs a technology that scares away these destructive insects.

The eco-friendly nature of the bulb adds to its appeal. Powered by solar energy, each unit effectively covers a quarter-acre radius. Extensive testing in Sri Lankan agricultural centers has confirmed its effectiveness, prompting companies like DPL gloves and Lallans Water to adopt this technology. Private sector agricultural enterprises have also shown keen interest, placing orders for the nine-bulb unit priced at a competitive Rs. 80,000 with installation included. Recognizing the potential of the domestic market, TOS Lanka plans to introduce the bulb through organized channels in the near future.

This innovation isn’t the only indication of TOS Lanka’s commitment to Sri Lanka. Established in 1995 as a BOI venture, the company initially focused on assembling electronic components for export to leading Japanese and European automobile and high-end industries. The inspiring leadership of former Sri Lankan President J.R. Jayewardene, particularly his speech at the UN assembly supporting Japan, played a key role in TOS Lanka’s decision to invest in the country.

However, the company’s initial plan to leverage Sri Lanka as a manufacturing base for exports to India faced hurdles due to import restrictions imposed by the Indian government. This setback limited TOS Lanka’s ability to fully capitalize on its Sri Lankan operations. Additionally, the lack of readily available locally-sourced raw materials, coupled with high electricity and freight costs, squeezed their profit margins. The economic downturn Sri Lanka experienced further impacted their business.

Despite these challenges, TOS Lanka acknowledges the positive aspects of the Sri Lankan investment climate, particularly the skilled workforce. The company expresses no major regrets about its decision to invest in the country. In a strategic shift, TOS Lanka has diversified its operations, moving beyond solely fulfilling global orders and establishing its own research and development (R&D) and manufacturing capabilities. This initiative has enabled them to supply leading local telecom players and actively participate in providing solutions for the government’s digitization initiatives. Notably, the company has invested around USD 1.5 million in these endeavors over the past two years. TOS Lanka’s story exemplifies a company that embraces innovation and demonstrates its commitment to Sri Lanka’s growth and development.
