Sri Lanka’s April Tea Crop Hits Five-Year High at 26.3 Mnkg

Production up 21% year-on-year; Low Growns lead sector gains

Sri Lanka’s tea industry recorded a strong rebound in April 2025, with monthly production reaching a five-year high of 26.3 million kilograms (Mnkg), according to Asia Siyaka Commodities PLC.

“All three elevations recorded sharp gains,” the report stated, noting a 21% increase from April 2024’s output of 21.6 Mnkg. This marks the highest April tea crop since 2021, when 30 Mnkg was harvested.

Tea production for the January to April period has also shown improvement, climbing 10% year-on-year to 88.3 Mnkg. However, it still trails behind the 2021 figure of 104 Mnkg for the same period.

Among the categories, Low Growns led the growth, rising from 48.5 Mnkg to 51.6 Mnkg. High Growns followed with 20.2 Mnkg, a 17% year-on-year increase, while Medium Growns posted a 15% gain, rising from 14.3 Mnkg to 16.4 Mnkg.

These figures indicate positive momentum for Sri Lanka’s tea sector, suggesting a potential turnaround after years of weather- and policy-related disruptions.
