The Education Ministry of Sri Lanka has announced a comprehensive insurance coverage plan for government school students, investing Rs. 7,112 million for up to three years. Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha stated that beginning from August 1, the “Suraksha Student Insurance” (Suraksha Sisu Rakshanaya) will be available to students in government schools, government-approved private schools, and specialized schools.
This announcement was made during the signing ceremony of the agreement between the Education Ministry and the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation. Education Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Chief Operating Officer Priyantha Perera signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.
The Suraksha Insurance plan provides significant coverage:
- In-patient treatment: Rs. 300,000 in government or private hospitals
- Out-patient care: Rs. 20,000
- Critical illness: Rs. 1,500,000
- Accident insurance: Up to Rs. 200,000 for complete permanent disability, Rs. 150,000 for permanent partial disability, and Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 100,000 for temporary disability.
Additionally, for students from families with an annual income of less than Rs. 180,000 or those under the ‘Aswasuma’ program, the insurance provides Rs. 75,000 per student in case of the death of a parent or legal guardian. The maximum amount allocated per death is Rs. 225,000, divided equally among all students in the family. Separate coverage is available for the death of both parents or the legal guardian.
The insurance plan also includes a free digital card for students, enhancing accessibility and efficiency.
