The local handloom sector in Sri Lanka is set for significant development, with the government implementing various programmes aimed at empowering women and youth in the industry. The Cabinet of Ministers approved a comprehensive proposal by Minister of Industries Ramesh Pathirana on Monday, addressing the challenges faced by local entrepreneurs.
The proposal, responding to issues like lack of entrepreneurial skills, insufficient eco-friendly infrastructure, shortage of quality products, and inadequate marketing facilities, was prepared with recommendations from the Department of National Planning.
Key agencies, including the National Enterprise Development Authority, the Department of Handloom, Lanka Salu Sala Limited, and the National Design Centre, are ready to implement these programmes. The initiative is supported by a provision of Rs. 300 million from the 2024 budget allocated to the Ministry of Industries.
