Marking a significant development in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, Thai Airways touched down at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport last night, resuming operations after a four-year hiatus. Flight TG 307, originating from Bangkok, Thailand, brought approximately 150 foreign tourists, including Thai nationals, eager to explore Sri Lanka.
The arrival ceremony reflected the importance of this occasion. Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva personally welcomed the flight and its passengers at the arrival terminal. A vibrant cultural dance performance organized by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. (AASL) added a touch of Sri Lankan hospitality to the event.
Further underlining the significance of this return, Minister de Silva and Thai Airways Chief Pilot Captain Ophad Sankrung jointly cut a cake to celebrate the aircraft’s arrival. Several dignitaries, including Eng. Athula Galketiya, Chairman of AASL, were also present at the ceremony.
Minister de Silva expressed optimism about Sri Lanka’s growing tourist numbers. He highlighted that nearly 800,000 tourists had arrived in the past three months alone, and he expects Thai Airways’ daily flights to further contribute to this positive trend. He also proposed exploring reduced airfare options to encourage more Sri Lankan travelers to visit Thailand, fostering stronger bilateral tourism ties between the two countries.
The return of Thai Airways with daily flights marks a welcome boost for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. This development not only increases travel options for international visitors but also strengthens the connection between Sri Lanka and Thailand, paving the way for a more vibrant tourist exchange.
