Tianjin Port in China Offers Support for Colombo Port Transformation

The Port of Tianjin in China has offered its support to transform Sri Lanka’s Port of Colombo into a green port, focusing on reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Chairman Chu Jin led a delegation from the Port of Tianjin, ranked ninth globally in container port standings, in discussions with Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation. This initiative aligns with global efforts among major container ports to adopt green practices and address climate change challenges.

During the meeting, the delegation emphasized the importance of utilizing green ammonia to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, given the environmental impact of carbon emissions. Minister de Silva appreciated the support from Tianjin Port, recognizing China’s expertise in industrialization and port operations. The collaboration aims to extend the ‘Green Port Concept’ beyond Colombo, with discussions also covering potential assistance for future developments at the Port of Galle and endorsement of plans for the Colombo North Port’s growth.

Prabath J. Malavige, Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, also took part in the discussions, highlighting the significance of sustainable practices in port operations and the broader maritime industry.
