A tragic bus accident in Indonesia’s West Java province claimed the lives of at least 11 people, predominantly students, and left dozens injured. The incident occurred when a bus carrying 61 students and teachers from Depok to Jakarta lost control on a downhill road, reportedly due to brake failure. The bus collided with multiple vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, before crashing into an electricity pole, leading to a devastating scene.
According to West Java police spokesperson Jules Abraham Abast, nine individuals died at the accident site, while two others succumbed to their injuries later, including a teacher and a local motorist. Fifty-three people were hospitalized, some in critical condition, as a result of the collision. The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident, with initial findings pointing to a malfunction in the bus’s braking system.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing challenges with road safety in Indonesia, where accidents are not uncommon due to inadequate safety standards and infrastructure. Similar accidents in the past, such as a tourist bus crash in East Java last year and another in West Java in 2021, underscore the urgent need for improved safety measures and stricter regulations to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
