Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), urged university non-academic staff to engage in negotiations, citing collaborative efforts by the Ministry of Higher Education and related government bodies to address salary disparities. Speaking at a media briefing held at the UGC, Prof. Amaratunga emphasized the importance of considering the welfare of university students amidst ongoing strike actions.
Addressing concerns over the impact of the trade union action, Prof. Amaratunga assured that the resolution process is nearing its conclusion. He dispelled rumors of facility closures due to the strike and highlighted discussions with university vice-chancellors, who affirmed the feasibility of conducting online lectures despite disruptions.
Notably, Prof. Amaratunga highlighted the imminent admission of students who sat for the 2022 (2023) and 2023 (2024) G.C.E. Advanced Level Examinations, potentially leading to two concurrent undergraduate cohorts. This situation poses challenges for higher education, underscoring the urgency of resolving the ongoing dispute.
With measures reaching their final stages, stakeholders anticipate a swift resolution to the university staff issue, ensuring continuity in academic operations and student welfare.
