Sector claimed 38% of daily turnover as broader index barely moved and volumes stayed well below the monthly average

Trading on the Colombo Stock Exchange was concentrated heavily in Food, Beverage & Tobacco counters, which accounted for 38% of the day’s turnover even as the broader market barely moved.
The All Share Price Index added just 15.77 points to close at 21,418.57, a gain of 0.07%, while the S&P SL20 rose 17.10 points, or 0.29%, to 6,000.24. Both moves were marginal, falling well short of levels that would typically signal a decisive market direction.
Banking and Capital Goods sectors together contributed a further 36% of turnover, meaning three sectors accounted for roughly three-quarters of all trading activity on the day.
Overall turnover came in at LKR 2,055.29 million, down 27.5% from the monthly average of roughly LKR 2.8 billion, indicating a quieter session by historical standards despite the sector concentration. Trading volume, however, rose 13.9% to 53.68 million shares.
Among individual counters, TESS led gainers with an 11% advance, followed by SHL, ONAL, LITE and DIPD, each up between 5% and 6%. On the losing side, BREW declined 6%, while MBSL, SMQT, AGPL and CRL each fell 5%.
Foreign investors were net buyers on the day, with inflows of LKR 684.92 million against outflows of LKR 213.09 million, producing a net inflow of LKR 471.83 million. That figure stands in sharp contrast to the broader trend: month-to-date foreign flows remain negative at LKR 16,211.1 million, and year-to-date net foreign outflows total LKR 52,491.3 million, underscoring that a single day of buying has not reversed the prevailing pattern of foreign selling in the market this year.
Market valuations stood at a price-to-earnings ratio of 11.3 times and a price-to-book ratio of 1.3 times.

Business Impact
The sharp concentration of trading in a handful of sectors suggests investor interest remains selective rather than broad-based, a pattern businesses and investors may want to factor into expectations of market-wide liquidity for capital raising or share disposals in the near term. While the day’s net foreign inflow may appear encouraging in isolation, the scale of year-to-date foreign outflows suggests overseas investor sentiment toward the market has not meaningfully shifted, a distinction relevant for listed companies assessing their foreign shareholder base and market executives gauging capital market depth.
