ASPI Extends Gains as Trading Activity Rebounds on Rating Upgrade Optimism

Capital Goods sector leads turnover as Colombo Bourse shakes off subdued recent sessions, though foreign investors stayed net sellers

The Colombo Stock Exchange saw a marked pickup in activity as investors returned to the market following Fitch Ratings’ upgrade of Sri Lanka’s sovereign credit rating to B- from CCC+.

The All Share Price Index climbed 75 points to close at 21,054.01, while the S&P SL20 added 19.41 points to finish at 5,928.86. Trading opened under pressure, with the index dipping in early hours before reversing course and climbing steadily through the session as the rating news drew investor attention.

Turnover reached LKR 1.4 billion, a sharp increase from the previous session and a signal that both retail and high-net-worth investors, whose participation had thinned in recent sessions, returned to the market. Even so, the day’s turnover remained 41.3% below the monthly average, a gap worth keeping in view before reading too much into a single day’s rebound.

The Capital Goods sector accounted for the largest share of turnover at 25%, with the Materials and Banking sectors together contributing a further 30%. Trading activity was heavily concentrated in a small number of counters, with the top contributor alone accounting for 8% of turnover and the remainder spread across a long tail of smaller counters.

Foreign investors were net sellers on the day, posting an outflow of LKR 62.1 million. That figure is a small fraction of the sector’s year-to-date net outflow, which stands well into the tens of billions of rupees, underscoring that foreign investor positioning in Sri Lankan equities remains cautious on balance despite the day’s positive index performance.

Among individual counters, gainers were led by a mid-cap stock that rose 11%, while the session’s steepest decline was a 9% fall in another counter — a reminder that stock-specific moves diverged even as the broader index advanced.

Business Impact

A rebound in trading activity, even one still below the monthly average, signals renewed investor engagement that listed companies and market intermediaries will welcome after several quieter sessions. However, the persistence of foreign net selling — both on the day and cumulatively for the year — suggests that international investor sentiment toward Sri Lankan equities has not yet turned decisively, a factor companies reliant on foreign capital inflows should continue to monitor.
