Capital Goods Sector Leads Colombo Bourse Trading Activity with 29% Turnover Share

Capital Goods counters dominated trading for the session, with Banking and Food, Beverage & Tobacco stocks together accounting for a further 36% of turnover, as sector activity remained concentrated in a handful of industries.

Trading activity on the Colombo Stock Exchange remained concentrated in a narrow band of sectors during the latest session, with Capital Goods counters leading turnover, according to exchange data.

Capital Goods accounted for 29% of the day’s turnover, the single largest sectoral share. The Banking sector and Food, Beverage & Tobacco sector followed, together contributing a further 36% of turnover. Combined, the three sectors accounted for roughly two-thirds of all trading activity for the session.

Among individual counters, John Keells Holdings (JKH) was the dominant contributor within the broader mix, accounting for 23% of total market turnover and 34% of trading volume — a scale that placed it well ahead of other constituents. Other notable turnover contributors included PKME, NDB, MELS and SAMP.

On the index side, positive contributions to the ASPI’s gain came from HNB, CARS, CINS, NDB and TKYO, spanning banking, capital goods and other sectors, reflecting a broader spread of index-level gains than the turnover concentration alone would suggest. Overall daily turnover stood at LKR 1,078.02Mn, down 37.7% from the monthly average.

Business Impact

Sector concentration of this degree means market-level turnover figures are being shaped disproportionately by a small number of industries and counters, rather than broad-based participation across the exchange. For businesses and investors in the Capital Goods, Banking, and Food, Beverage & Tobacco sectors, this level of activity may reflect targeted institutional or foreign interest specific to those industries. For companies outside these sectors, the data is a reminder that headline turnover figures may not reflect trading conditions across the wider market.
