Banking Counters Drive Trading as Colombo Bourse Slips

The ASPI and S&P SL20 each fell 0.50% as banking stocks accounted for more than four in ten rupees traded

The Colombo Stock Exchange closed lower on September 10, with trading activity concentrated heavily in banking counters even as broader turnover remained well below recent norms.

The All Share Price Index (ASPI) fell 108.26 points, or 0.50%, to close at 21,357.74, while the S&P SL20 index declined 29.95 points, also down 0.50%, to 6,003.92. MELS, BREW, DIAL, CARS and CARG were the largest drags on the index.

Daily turnover rose to LKR 1.45 billion from LKR 972 million the previous session, though it remained 44.4% below the monthly average of LKR 2.6 billion. The Banking sector alone accounted for 41% of turnover, with Capital Goods and Diversified Financials contributing a further 25% between them — meaning three sectors drove roughly two-thirds of all trading activity on the day. Trading volume totaled 35.08 million shares, down 18.6% from the prior session.

Among individual counters, CPRT led gainers with a 19% advance, while LGL.X and TESS each rose 6%. AUTO led losers, down 9%, followed by CFI and CTLD, each down 6%.

Foreign investors were net buyers on the day, with a net inflow of LKR 16.13 million on gross inflows of LKR 32.15 million against outflows of LKR 16.02 million. That single-day figure should be read against a broader trend of foreign selling: net foreign flows remain negative on a month-to-date basis, at LKR 678.5 million in net outflows, and negative year-to-date, at LKR 56.42 billion in net outflows.

Business Impact

The concentration of turnover in banking and financial counters suggests institutional and crossing-driven activity rather than broad retail participation, consistent with turnover running well under the monthly average. For investors and business owners tracking market breadth, a market this narrowly led by a handful of sectors offers a limited read on overall corporate sentiment. The day’s modest net foreign inflow is not, on its own, evidence of a turn in foreign investor appetite given the substantial outflows recorded over the month and year to date.
