Banking, Capital Goods and Diversified Financials counters accounted for roughly 62% of turnover even as daily volumes fell nearly 30% below the monthly average

Trading on the Colombo Stock Exchange was concentrated in a small number of sectors on August 7, even as overall market activity slowed well below recent norms.
The banking sector led daily turnover with a 32% share, followed by the Capital Goods and Diversified Financials sectors, which together contributed a further 30%. Combined, the three sectors accounted for roughly 62% of total trading activity on the day. Among individual counters, a single banking stock alone made up around a quarter of total market turnover and more than half of total traded volume, underscoring the extent to which activity was centred on a narrow set of names.
The concentration came against a backdrop of thinner overall trading. Daily turnover totalled LKR 1.9 billion, down 29.6% from the monthly average of LKR 2.7 billion, and volume fell sharply from the previous session as well. It is worth noting plainly that despite the sectoral concentration, this was not a high-activity session in absolute terms — turnover and volume both declined markedly compared to recent trading days, meaning today’s story is about where the (comparatively limited) activity was directed, not about a surge in market participation.
Despite the subdued turnover, the benchmark ASPI closed higher for a third consecutive session, adding 100 points to end at 21,370.09, while the S&P SL20 gained 17 points to close at 5,988.16. Among individual counters, AGPL led gainers with a 13% advance, followed by SMOT, LWL and AMSL, while CIT and CBNK were among the session’s weakest performers, each declining 7%.
Foreign investors remained net sellers on the day, though the outflow was modest at LKR 15.8 million, against a backdrop of significantly larger net selling on a month-to-date and year-to-date basis.

Business Impact
Heavy concentration in banking and financial counters suggests investor focus remains centred on rate-sensitive sectors amid the current environment of easing government securities yields. The narrower participation base, reflected in below-average turnover, points to a market where price moves may be more sensitive to activity in a small number of large-cap names — a dynamic worth monitoring for businesses and investors tracking market depth and liquidity.
