Colombo Bourse Trading Activity Slows Sharply as Turnover Falls Below Monthly Average

Daily turnover fell 78% short of the monthly average as both benchmark indices closed lower, with Capital Goods counters leading a subdued session.

Trading activity on the Colombo Stock Exchange thinned sharply on Tuesday, with daily turnover falling well short of recent norms even as both benchmark indices closed in negative territory.

The All Share Price Index (ASPI) fell 65.12 points, or 0.31%, to close at 21,279.65, while the S&P SL20 index declined 14.59 points, or 0.24%, to 5,994.81. CARG, DIAL, COMB, BREW and CDB were among the largest negative contributors to the index during the session.

Daily turnover totaled LKR 796.92 million, a decline of 78.1% against the monthly average of LKR 3.6 billion. Trading volume came in at 27.22 million shares, down 59.4% from the previous session. The scale of the pullback marks one of the thinnest trading sessions recorded in recent weeks.

The Capital Goods sector led turnover with a 19% share of the day’s activity, while the Materials and Banking sectors together accounted for a further 28%, leaving these three sectors responsible for roughly half of all trading value on the day.

Foreign investor participation was broadly balanced, with inflows of LKR 55.99 million against outflows of LKR 60.14 million, resulting in a marginal net outflow of LKR 4.14 million. Among individual counters, CINS.X and SAMP recorded the largest net foreign inflows, while JKH and DIAL saw the largest net foreign outflows. Market valuations stood at a PER of 11.2x and a PBV of 1.3x.

Business Impact

A significant drop in trading turnover, well below the monthly average, typically signals reduced short-term investor engagement rather than a shift in underlying market fundamentals. For business owners and companies monitoring the equity market as a barometer of sentiment, thinner volumes can mean lower liquidity for those looking to enter or exit sizeable positions, and may also reflect a wait-and-see posture among investors pending clearer directional signals from corporate earnings or macroeconomic data.

Editorial note: Today’s index moves were modest and within normal daily variation; the news value of this piece rests specifically on the scale of the turnover decline relative to the monthly average, not on price direction.
