A small net purchase on the day does little to offset a persistent pattern of foreign selling on the Colombo Bourse this year

Foreign investors were net buyers on the Colombo Stock Exchange on Monday, posting a net inflow of LKR 15.68 million as LKR 75.88 million in purchases outweighed LKR 60.20 million in sales. On its own, the figure marks a positive session for foreign participation. Set against the broader trend, however, it does little to change the picture: foreign investors have been net sellers of Sri Lankan equities to the tune of LKR 2.1 billion month-to-date and LKR 36.2 billion year-to-date.
The scale of the mismatch is stark. Monday’s inflow represents less than 0.1% of the outflow recorded so far this year. Foreign selling has been a consistent feature of the market in 2026, with the net foreign position remaining negative through most trading sessions, punctuated by only occasional and comparatively small buying days such as this one.
On a stock level, Commercial Bank (COMB), Hatton National Bank subsidiary counters and TKYO.X were among the largest recipients of foreign buying interest during the day, while Sampath Bank (SAMP) and Windforce (WIND) saw the largest foreign selling.
Overall market turnover stood at LKR 2.07 billion, with foreign investors representing a relatively modest share of total activity — inflows and outflows combined came to LKR 136.08 million, or roughly 6.6% of the day’s total turnover, with domestic investors accounting for the bulk of trading.
Business Impact
Sustained foreign outflows of this magnitude over the year point to reduced foreign participation in the Sri Lankan equity market relative to prior periods, a trend that can affect market liquidity, valuations and the currency’s demand-supply balance over time. Individual days of foreign buying, such as Monday’s, are worth noting but should be read in the context of the broader year-to-date trend rather than as a signal of reversal.
