Foreign Investors Extend Selling as Sampath Bank Drives Net Outflow

Single counter accounts for the bulk of the day’s foreign exit as year-to-date outflows pass LKR 53 billion

Foreign investors were net sellers of Colombo-listed equities on Thursday, with outflows totaling LKR 624.5 million even as the broader market advanced. The bulk of that selling was concentrated in a single stock, Sampath Bank, which accounted for LKR 586.5 million of the day’s net foreign outflow — underscoring how narrow the selling pressure was rather than reflecting a broad-based retreat from the market.

Foreign inflows for the day stood at LKR 32.6 million against outflows of LKR 657 million, leaving the net figure firmly negative. Diprio Holdings and AAIC were among the counters that attracted the largest net foreign buying on the day, at LKR 14.9 million and LKR 8.0 million respectively, but these gains were not enough to offset the exit from Sampath Bank.

Set against a longer run, Thursday’s outflow is modest. Foreign investors have sold a net LKR 16.8 billion in equities so far this month and LKR 53.1 billion since the start of the year, a trend that has now extended into a tenth consecutive session of net selling based on the market’s rolling foreign flow data. Viewed against that backdrop, the day’s LKR 624.5 million outflow represents a continuation of the prevailing pattern rather than an acceleration of it — foreign selling has in fact moderated compared to the sharper single-day outflows recorded earlier in the month, including a LKR 7.97 billion outflow on August 6.

The selling came even as local participation drove the ASPI to a higher close, with the index gaining 120.43 points, or 0.56%, to end at 21,539.00. Retail investors were the dominant force behind the day’s trading activity, with high-net-worth participation comparatively subdued.

Business Impact

Persistent foreign selling, even when driven by a single counter on a given day, is a relevant signal for listed companies and their boards when weighing capital-raising plans or share issuances, as it can affect pricing and demand for large-block placements. For business owners and executives more broadly, sustained foreign portfolio outflows are one input — alongside currency and interest rate trends — that market watchers use to gauge external sentiment toward the Sri Lankan economy, though a single day’s concentrated selling in one stock does not by itself indicate a shift in that sentiment.
