The announcement was made during a meeting between Swedish Ambassador to Sri Lanka Jan Thesleff and Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mangala Wijesinghe, highlighting growing cooperation aimed at expanding bilateral trade and investment opportunities.
During discussions held at the EDB on 14 July, Ambassador Thesleff confirmed that preparations are already underway to organise a Swedish trade delegation for Sri Lanka Expo 2027, which is scheduled to take place in Colombo from 14 to 17 January 2027. The exhibition is expected to bring together international buyers, investors, and Sri Lankan exporters, creating new opportunities for export growth and commercial partnerships.
The meeting was also attended by Honorary Consul-General of Sweden in Sri Lanka Sanjay Kulatunga and senior EDB officials, reflecting the importance both countries place on strengthening economic engagement.
EDB Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe briefed the Swedish delegation on Sri Lanka’s recent export performance, outlining the country’s key export industries and emerging opportunities in global markets. He also highlighted the strategic importance of Sri Lanka Expo 2027 as the country’s premier export promotion platform, designed to showcase Sri Lankan products and services to international buyers while encouraging long-term investment partnerships.
The Swedish trade delegation to participate in Sri Lanka Expo 2027 initiative is expected to further strengthen commercial relations between Sri Lanka and the Nordic region. Ambassador Thesleff reaffirmed Sweden’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s export promotion efforts, noting that Sri Lankan exporters are well positioned to meet growing demand in Sweden and neighbouring Nordic markets.
He highlighted Sri Lanka’s strong reputation for producing high-quality and sustainable products, qualities that increasingly align with consumer preferences in Northern Europe. Sustainability, traceability, and ethical production standards continue to play a growing role in purchasing decisions across Nordic markets, providing opportunities for Sri Lankan businesses that meet these expectations.
The discussions identified several sectors with strong export potential, including Ceylon Cinnamon, coconut and coconut-based products, gems and jewellery, apparel, and information and communication technology (ICT) services. These industries are viewed as having significant opportunities to expand their presence in Sweden and across the wider Nordic region through stronger commercial engagement and market access initiatives.
Ambassador Thesleff also commended the quality standards maintained by Sri Lankan exporters, describing them as a competitive advantage in international markets. He expressed confidence that deeper collaboration between Swedish buyers and Sri Lankan businesses could generate new trade opportunities while supporting sustainable economic growth in both countries.
For its part, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board welcomed Sweden’s continued commitment to promoting bilateral trade and investment. The EDB reiterated its appreciation for Sweden’s support in facilitating commercial partnerships and expanding access for Sri Lankan exporters in Europe.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral economic relations through greater business engagement, investment, and export promotion. Ambassador Thesleff once again confirmed his intention to lead a Swedish trade delegation to Sri Lanka Expo 2027, signalling strong confidence in Sri Lanka’s export sector and its growing role as a reliable supplier of high-quality products and services to global markets.
