A single stock and sector drove more than 40% of daily trading activity on the Colombo Bourse
Trading on the Colombo Stock Exchange was heavily concentrated in a single sector and stock, with Capital Goods counters accounting for 42% of daily turnover and John Keells Holdings (JKH) alone contributing nearly a third of total market activity.
JKH generated LKR 662 million in turnover, representing 32% of the day’s total LKR 2.07 billion traded, and accounted for 52% of total market volume. The counter was also among the leading positive contributors to the ASPI’s gains during the session.
Beyond Capital Goods, banking and food, beverage & tobacco counters collectively made up a further 39% of turnover, meaning three sectors accounted for the large majority of the day’s trading activity. Among individual counters, Sampath Bank (SAMP), Hayleys (HAYL) and Hatton National Bank (HNB) were among the next-largest contributors to turnover, though each represented a single-digit share of the total.
The concentration comes even as overall market turnover rose 17.2% above the monthly average, reaching LKR 2.07 billion, while traded volume of 65.14 million shares was down sharply from recent sessions. The combination of high turnover value but lower share volume points to activity concentrated in higher-priced, large-cap counters such as JKH rather than broad-based retail participation.
