Banking Counters Anchor Colombo Bourse Turnover as Market Extends Gains

Banking sector contributes over a third of daily trading activity as ASPI and S&P SL20 close higher

The Colombo Bourse extended its recent gains on Thursday, with trading activity concentrated heavily in banking counters. The Banking sector accounted for 38% of the day’s total turnover, while the Capital Goods and Materials sectors together contributed a further 30% — meaning three sectors drove roughly two-thirds of all trading activity in the session.

The ASPI closed at 21,539.00, up 120.43 points or 0.56%, while the S&P SL20 added 31.85 points, or 0.53%, to end at 6,032.09. Total market turnover for the day stood at LKR 2.78 billion, broadly in line with the recent monthly average, while trading volume rose to 76.7 million shares.

Sampath Bank was the single largest contributor to turnover, generating LKR 829 million, or roughly 30% of total market activity on its own. Sinnia Africa Ltd followed at LKR 281 million, with John Keells Holdings, Carson Cumberbatch and Dialog Axiata rounding out the top five turnover contributors. On the volume side, activity was more evenly spread, with Sinnia Africa, John Keells Holdings, AGSTAR and Sampath Bank each accounting for high single-digit shares of total shares traded.

Retail investors were the dominant participants in the session, with the report noting relatively low participation from high-net-worth investors. Positive interim results from selected banks and a decline in short-term Treasury bill yields were cited as factors supporting buying interest in the sector during the session. Dialog Axiata, Carson Cumberbatch, DFCC Bank, National Development Bank and Access Engineering were the leading positive contributors to the ASPI’s advance.

On the gainers list, Serendib Engineering led with a 12% advance, followed by LB Finance at 11% and Seylan Bank counters at 10%. On the losing side, AINSURANCE fell 9%, while Lanka Loans and Tess Agro each declined 7%.

Business Impact

Heavy concentration of trading in banking counters reflects investor focus on the sector’s recent earnings performance and its sensitivity to falling short-term interest rates, which tend to support bank margins and loan demand. For businesses and investors tracking market breadth, the degree of concentration — with just three sectors driving two-thirds of turnover — is a useful signal of how narrow or broad-based current buying interest actually is, distinct from the headline index move.
