Turnover Tops LKR 3 Billion as One Counter Accounts for Nearly Half of Colombo Trading

Trading on the Colombo bourse was more than twice the level of any recent session, but a single stock supplied about 46% of the value traded.

Trading on the Colombo Stock Exchange jumped sharply on Monday, with turnover reaching LKR 3.16 billion. The figure is more than double the highest daily turnover recorded in the previous 11 sessions, and about 3.6 times the LKR 873 million traded on the previous trading day. Share volume rose 126% to 67.6 million.

The surge was heavily concentrated. AEL accounted for LKR 1.45 billion, about 46% of the day’s value, and roughly 27% of all shares traded. Lanka IOC (LIOC) followed with LKR 374 million, or 12%. John Keells Holdings contributed LKR 158 million, Sunshine Holdings LKR 137 million and Commercial Bank LKR 104 million. The remaining counters made up about 30% of turnover.

By sector, capital goods took 54% of turnover. Energy, together with food, beverage and tobacco, contributed a further 24%.

The concentration does not fully explain the busy session. Excluding AEL, turnover was still about LKR 1.71 billion, above the highest daily figure in the previous 11 sessions. Activity was therefore elevated beyond one counter, although AEL accounts for most of the jump.

The heavy trading came on a weak day for prices. The All Share Price Index fell 168 points, or 0.81%, to 20,644, and the S&P SL20 lost 36 points, or 0.62%, to 5,847. Market capitalisation declined 0.9% to LKR 7.47 trillion.

Foreign investors were net sellers by LKR 112 million, with sales of LKR 145 million against purchases of LKR 33 million. AEL saw net foreign selling of LKR 31.8 million, while NDB recorded the largest outflow at LKR 60 million.

Market turnover often rises on days when large blocks of shares change hands, and a single day’s spike does not necessarily signal a lasting change in activity. Whether volumes stay elevated in the coming sessions will show if the jump was a one-off or a wider pick-up in participation.

Business Impact

For companies considering share issues or other market fundraising, a day of heavy turnover is not the same as sustained investor demand, especially when one stock drives most of it. Listed companies and market observers should look at whether volumes broaden across more counters before reading the surge as a shift in market conditions. Investors tracking liquidity should note that a few large trades can distort headline turnover, and that index-level moves and trading value can tell different stories on the same day.
