Trading volumes decline sharply as market activity remains well under recent norms

Trading activity on the Colombo Bourse remained well below recent norms, with daily turnover coming in at LKR 1.3 billion, a figure 43% below the monthly average of LKR 2.3 billion. Trading volume also declined sharply, falling to 46.28 million shares, a drop of 44.5% from the previous session.
Turnover over the past two weeks has been uneven, ranging from a low of LKR 750 million to a high of LKR 2.23 billion, with today’s figure sitting toward the lower end of that range. Despite the subdued overall activity, a limited number of high-net-worth investors accounted for the bulk of the day’s turnover, driven by select on-board and off-board transactions rather than broad-based retail or institutional participation.
Sector activity was concentrated, with Materials leading turnover at a 19% share, while Capital Goods and Transportation collectively contributed a further 37%. Among individual counters, PKME, DIPD and AEL were among the largest contributors to daily turnover.
Market capitalization stood at LKR 7,632.86 billion, with valuations holding at a price-to-earnings ratio of 10.9x and a price-to-book ratio of 1.3x, broadly in line with recent levels despite the lighter trading activity.
It is worth noting that a single day of reduced turnover does not necessarily signal a sustained liquidity shift, and activity levels on the bourse have fluctuated notably over the preceding two weeks. The extent to which today’s subdued volumes represent a short-term lull versus a more persistent trend will become clearer over subsequent sessions.

Business Impact
Reduced turnover and volume can signal narrower investor conviction and lower near-term liquidity, which may affect price discovery for less-traded counters and widen bid-ask spreads. For business owners and executives monitoring the bourse as a barometer of investor sentiment, a single subdued session is not yet indicative of a broader trend, but sustained low turnover over multiple sessions would be a more meaningful signal worth tracking alongside foreign flow data.
