Food, Beverage & Tobacco Stocks Dominate Trading as Colombo Turnover Falls a Third Below Average

Nearly half of all shares traded on the Colombo bourse Tuesday came from a single sector, as overall market activity stayed well under its monthly norm

Trading on the Colombo Stock Exchange remained narrowly concentrated, with the Food, Beverage & Tobacco sector accounting for 48% of daily turnover — nearly half of all shares changing hands on the bourse — even as overall market activity stayed well below its recent norm.

Daily turnover came in at LKR 1.63 billion, a third lower than the monthly average of LKR 2.4 billion, despite share volume climbing to 69.38 million units, up 24.3% from the previous session. The divergence between rising volume and falling turnover value points to trading activity skewed toward lower-priced counters during the session.

Beyond the dominant Food, Beverage & Tobacco sector, the Capital Goods and Banking sectors together contributed a further 25% of turnover, meaning three sectors accounted for roughly three-quarters of all trading activity on the day. The remaining sectors of the market saw comparatively limited participation.

The broader indices closed lower alongside this narrow trading pattern, with the ASPI down 0.61% to 21,133.41 and the S&P SL20 down 0.49% to 5,947.29. Foreign investors were net sellers on the day, though the outflow of LKR 8.01 million was modest in scale.

Sector concentration of this degree is not unusual on lower-turnover days, when a smaller number of active counters can dominate headline trading figures. It does, however, mean the day’s turnover and volume numbers are less representative of market-wide sentiment than they might otherwise appear.

Business Impact

For companies and investors outside the Food, Beverage & Tobacco, Capital Goods and Banking sectors, Tuesday’s session offered limited price discovery, with thin trading in other counters. Listed companies in the dominant sectors saw comparatively higher liquidity, which can matter for shareholders looking to enter or exit positions at scale. The overall shortfall in turnover against the monthly average also points to continued subdued risk appetite in the broader market.
