HUTCH Kandy Signature+ Outlet marks the latest step in the company’s sustainability-focused retail transformation, combining environmentally responsible design, renewable energy and customer-centric services in Sri Lanka’s historic hill capital.
HUTCH Kandy Signature+ Outlet brings eco-friendly retail innovation to Sri Lanka’s hill capital
HUTCH Sri Lanka has officially launched its Kandy Signature+ outlet, expanding its nationwide retail transformation initiative while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable business practices. The new outlet becomes the third location developed under the company’s sustainability-centric retail concept, following the successful openings of Signature+ outlets in Colombo Fort and Negombo.
Designed to move beyond the conventional retail experience, the HUTCH Kandy Signature+ Outlet showcases an innovative approach where sustainability is integrated into both its construction and daily operations. Nearly 90 percent of the outlet’s interior has been created using sustainably sourced and repurposed materials, demonstrating how environmentally responsible design can coexist with a premium customer experience.
The outlet features reclaimed pallet wood, arecanut leaves, banana bark and kumburu seeds as key design elements. These materials have been carefully transformed into high-quality interior finishes by local artisans, supporting traditional craftsmanship while promoting a circular economy. By sourcing locally and repurposing natural materials, HUTCH has also created economic opportunities for artisan communities involved in the project.
The nature-inspired retail environment has been designed to provide customers with a more welcoming and engaging experience. Instead of a traditional transaction-focused setting, visitors can comfortably explore HUTCH’s range of mobile products and digital services, receive customer support and interact with the brand in a relaxed atmosphere that reflects the company’s sustainability values.
Environmental responsibility extends well beyond the outlet’s design. Renewable energy powers day-to-day operations, reducing the outlet’s environmental footprint while supporting cleaner energy adoption. Customers can also responsibly dispose of outdated or unusable mobile devices through dedicated e-waste recycling facilities available at the location.
These initiatives align with HUTCH’s broader sustainability strategy and support its commitments under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through responsible resource management and waste reduction initiatives, the company aims to encourage more environmentally conscious practices across Sri Lanka’s retail sector.
Commenting on the launch, HUTCH Sri Lanka Chief Executive Officer Saumitra Gupta said sustainability has become an integral part of the company’s operational philosophy rather than an isolated corporate initiative.
“Sustainability is not a footnote for us; it is built into how we operate. The Kandy Signature+ outlet is a reflection of that. It shows what retail can look like when you make deliberate choices about energy conservation, materials, craft, and the communities you work with. We are proud to bring that to the historic city of Kandy.”
The launch reflects a broader shift within the telecommunications industry, where operators are increasingly investing in sustainable retail concepts that reduce environmental impact while enhancing customer engagement. By integrating renewable energy, environmentally friendly materials and recycling facilities into its retail footprint, HUTCH is demonstrating how innovation can support both business growth and sustainability objectives.
The initiative also strengthens the company’s contribution to Sri Lanka telecommunications, an industry that continues to evolve beyond digital connectivity by embracing environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities. As customer expectations increasingly favour businesses with responsible practices, sustainable retail concepts are becoming an important differentiator across the sector.
Looking ahead, HUTCH plans to expand its Signature+ retail network across Sri Lanka, bringing the sustainability-focused concept to additional cities. The company believes these outlets will set a new benchmark for retail and enterprise customer servicing by combining environmentally responsible operations with modern customer experiences.
The Kandy Signature+ outlet represents more than a new retail location. It reflects HUTCH’s long-term vision of integrating sustainability into everyday business decisions while creating value for customers, local communities and the environment. As the company continues to grow its Signature+ network, it aims to demonstrate that responsible innovation can become a defining feature of Sri Lanka’s retail landscape.
