Rupee Extends Gains Against the Dollar Amid Rising Banking System Liquidity

The LKR strengthened against the US dollar as excess liquidity in the banking system continued to build

The Sri Lankan rupee firmed against the US dollar to start the week, continuing a period of relative currency stability as liquidity conditions in the banking system remained ample.

The rupee traded at LKR 333.09 against the US dollar, an appreciation from LKR 333.60 recorded previously. The move was modest in scale but consistent with a broader backdrop of expanding liquidity in the banking system, which stood at LKR 301.35 billion, up from LKR 290.69 billion.

The currency move came alongside a broader shift lower in government security yields over the past week, with Treasury yields declining between 25 and 45 basis points across most of the curve. Easier liquidity conditions in the banking system are typically consistent with, though not solely responsible for, both a firmer currency and softer yields, as more ample rupee liquidity can support demand for government securities while also easing pressure in the foreign exchange market.

Business Impact

A firmer rupee offers modest relief for importers and businesses with foreign currency-denominated liabilities, potentially easing input costs for goods and materials sourced abroad. Exporters, conversely, may see a marginally reduced competitive advantage on international pricing, though the scale of the move is unlikely to have a material near-term effect either way. The broader liquidity expansion in the banking system is a more consequential signal for businesses reliant on bank credit, as ample system liquidity generally supports more accommodative lending conditions.
