New Tourism Corridor Unveiled: Discover 38 Exciting Sites!

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has revealed significant progress in discussions with local authorities regarding the development of the Pinnawala-Kitulgala tourism corridor. SLTDA Chairman Priantha Fernando mentioned that multiple rounds of discussions have already taken place with relevant Local Government (LG) authorities to establish the area as a tourism zone. As part of this initiative, around 38 sites have been identified within the corridor for development, showcasing the potential for tourism growth in the region.

Fernando emphasized that the development efforts will be a collaborative endeavor involving the SLTDA, local authorities, Government agencies, and district development committees. However, specific modalities for implementing the development plans, including monitoring mechanisms and responsibilities, are still under consideration.

The envisioned project aims to enhance infrastructure and promote tourism in the Pinnawala-Kitulgala corridor, known for attractions like the Kitulgala white water rafting area and the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. President Ranil Wickremesinghe, during the 2024 Budget speech, allocated Rs. 750 million for the fast-tracking of the corridor’s development into a dedicated tourism zone, emphasizing the importance of this initiative for tourism growth and regional development.
