The passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam in India and Kankesanthurai (KKS) is set to resume on May 13, 2024, following its initial launch in October 2023 by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). Operated by private operator IndSri Ferry Services, selected in consultation with the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL), the service aims to bolster maritime connectivity between the two nations.
In a bid to make the ferry service more accessible and attractive to passengers, the Indian Government has committed to covering the costs of applicable taxes and charges, amounting to over Rs. 25 million per month for a year. Furthermore, Sri Lanka has reduced the deviation tax for passengers departing the country by passenger vessels, enhancing the affordability of the service. Additionally, the Indian Government has extended a grant of US$ 63.65 million to GOSL for the rehabilitation of KKS Harbour, reflecting India’s dedication to Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and progress.
The resumption of the ferry service underscores India’s commitment to fostering people-centric policies and strengthening bilateral ties with Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significance of connectivity during the launch of the service in 2023, highlighting its role in bringing countries and people closer. As both nations look towards enhancing connectivity through various initiatives, such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and electricity grid interconnection, the ferry service stands as a tangible symbol of their collaborative efforts towards economic partnership and regional development.
