The British Council in Sri Lanka has unveiled a groundbreaking publication titled “Being a Teacher with Disabilities: Perspectives, Practices, and Opportunities.” This comprehensive report examines the challenges, opportunities, and support networks encountered by educators with disabilities in Sri Lanka and four other countries.
Based on extensive research and collaboration, the report sheds light on the lived experiences of teachers with disabilities, featuring primary data from interviews with 25 educators. One striking theme emerged from Sri Lankan narratives – the experience of being on the periphery, with some teachers not formally assigned teaching responsibilities despite years of service.
Orlando Edwards, British Council Country Director, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in education systems, highlighting the vital role teachers play as positive role models. The report, which includes firsthand accounts and policy reviews, aims to inspire leaders and influence policy-making for more inclusive education worldwide.
