In a significant development for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has granted the first 10 approvals for travel and tourism companies to import electric and hybrid vehicles. The approvals were handed out by Tourism Minister Harin Fernando during a recent event.

The approved firms include:

  • Jungle Beach Resort Ltd.
  • Colombo Courtyard Ltd.
  • Tangerine Tours Ltd.
  • Cape Weligama
  • Siddhalepa Ayurveda Health Resort
  • Esna Holdings Ltd.

On April 1, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the importation of 1,000 electric and hybrid vehicles, excluding special tax relief. This decision allows for the import of 750 vans (seating 6-15 people) and 250 buses (ranging from 16-45 seats).

Minister Fernando emphasized the importance of this initiative in providing modern and reliable transportation options to meet the growing demand from tourists. He stated, “The importation of these vehicles addresses the urgent need for dependable transportation to enhance our tourism sector. This is a crucial step towards revitalizing the industry.”

The Minister also mentioned that around 25 approvals have been issued for 110 vehicles, with plans to grant 100 more approvals in the coming week.

Industry stakeholders view the introduction of these vehicles as a timely boost for the tourism sector, which has faced numerous challenges since 2019.
